Florida lawmakers have proposed a measure that would have a significant impact on young teens’ access to social media. Under the bill, those under the age of 16 would not be able to create a new social media account, and existing accounts of these users would have to be deleted by the platforms. In addition, social media platforms would be required to remove any personal data associated with those accounts.
The law also stipulates that age verification of users should be done by a “non- governmental, independent third party” that is not directly affiliated with the platform. This move is intended to increase the protection of minors’ personal data and strengthen control over their online presence.
